Situé sur la côte orientale, à l'embouchure de la rivière Silis, elle fut habitée dès l'age du bronze, s'est fortement développée sous la domination romaine puis détruite par Attila en 452 et par les Lombards un siècle après et peu à peu abandonnée par ses habitants, qui ont cherché refuge dans les îles de la lagune, comme Torcello et Burano, là où plus tard, Venise sera construite. Altino compte aujourd'hui environ 100 habitants et un musée historique.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;Historique&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Strabon a dit de la ville qu'elle était "dans un marais, et sa taille est similaire à celle de Ravenne, c'est une ville dont les canaux d'eau ont été inondés par les marées: «Ces villes sont pour la majeure partie entourée de marais, et donc soumises à des inondations. " Altinum est à la fois stratégique et charmante. Les recherches et des inscriptions funéraires montrent qu'elle était un centre important dès le cinquième siècle avant JC. I. Elle s'est développée en parallèle avec la romanisation de la région et, pour plus particulièrement avec la construction de la &lt;a href="http://sbmp.provincia.venezia.it/mir/english/musei/annia.htm" mce_real_href="http://sbmp.provincia.venezia.it/mir/english/musei/annia.htm"&gt;Via Annia&lt;/a&gt; (131 av JC), qui passe au travers, reliant Adria avec Aquileia puis par construction de la &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Via_Claudia_Augusta" mce_real_href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Via_Claudia_Augusta"&gt;Via Claudia Augusta&lt;/a&gt;, qui part d'Altinum et atteint le "limes" du nord au Danube, sur une distance de 350 km, en passant par le lac de Constance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;À la fin de la République, Altinum devint un municipium et ses citoyens ont été attribués à la tribu romaine Scaptia. Le lieu est devenu d'une importance stratégique et commerciale, et le climat relativement doux (compte tenu de sa situation dans le nord), a favorisé la construction de villas que Martial (Epigr. Iv. 25) à comparées avec celles de Baiae. Altinum devait compter 20 000 habitants environ.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;Altinum est aussi mentionnée par Velleius Paterculus (2.76.2) dans son récit traitant de la guerre civile en 42 av JC. puis par Vitruve (1.4.11), Strabo (5.214), Pline (3.126), Tacite (Hist. 3.6). Lucius Verus y est mort en 169 ap.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;Vers 452, Attila le Hun capture la ville et en brûle la plus grande partie, ainsi que plusieurs autres villes voisines. Certains réfugiés s'installent dans les îles des lagunes, formant des colonies de peuplement qui deviendront Venise. En 568 elle fut conquise par les Lombards, dont la domination accélère l'émigration vers les iles des lagunes. Certaines de celles-ci portent le nom d'anciens quartiers de la ville antique tels que: Torcello (de Torricellum), Murano (Ammurianum) et Burano (Porta Boreana). Altinum devint le siège d'un évêché au moins à partir du cinquième siècle de notre ère, le premier évêque étant Héliodore d'Altino (Eliodoro). Le diocèse catholique a été transféré à Torcello en 647. Aux 10 e-11 e siècles, le domaine d'Altino est totalement abandonné, un nouvel établissement est apparu au 15ème siècle, qui devait devenir le voisin Quarto d'Altino. L'actuel village a été fondé au 19e siècle.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Redécouverte&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Les fondations de la ville antique ont récemment été redécouvertes à proximité de l'aéroport Marco Polo, 10 km au nord de Venise. Elles ont été examinées notamment à partir de photos en infra rouge prises pendant une période de sécheresse en Juillet 2007. La traditionnelle grille urbaine romaine, ici avec un canal qui coupe à travers la ville, et les traces reconnaissables des théâtres et autres structures publiques ont permis à Andrea Ninfo Alessandro Fontana, Paolo Mozzi et Francesco Ferrarese de l'Université de Padoue de procéder à une reconstitution de la ville, ainsi qu'à la topographie et le réseau de canaux et écluses qui drainaient les marais environnants.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal"&gt;Le site est enfoui dans une zone marécageuse, au moins sous 40 cm de sédiments, et n'a jamais été recouvert de constructions plus récentes.
